This is an antique monochrome plate called "Grisaille" made by the Sarreguemines kiln. Grisaille means gray in French and refers to a technique of finely depicted monochrome pointillism. A scene from a story is depicted in the center, and the rim is decorated with luxurious arabesques and figures. The French word "March" written on the bottom of the plate indicates that this is one plate from a very popular series depicting the events and scenery of each month of the year, a series that colors the year. The center depicts monthly events and scenery, while the rim is adorned with angels, medieval couples, and arabesques in very delicate monochrome pointillism. This series was largely produced around 1875-1900.
The Sarreguemines kiln began operations in 1790 near the border of France and Germany. It is a famous kiln whose quality was recognized by Napoleon, who became a customer. In particular, in the 19th century, it became immensely popular for its "talking plates," which depicted stories and satirical drawings.
There are some cracks and scratches that appear to have been made during production, but the overall condition is good.
